 5/24 COLUMBIA FALLS and ELLSWORTH

In a continuation of the partnership that began last year, Wreaths Across America is working with media communications students at Hancock County Technical Center to honor America’s heroes. “A Night of Students Honoring Veterans” will be held at 7 p.m. May 24 at The Grand in Ellsworth. The celebration, with special words from first lady Ann LePage, is the culmination of a documentary project based on students’ experiences participating in last year’s convoy from the Pine Tree State to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. WAA’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies and events at Arlington, and more than 800 other locations across America and overseas.

5/25 THOMASTON

Boots on the Ground, honoring veterans and active military personnel and their families, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, on the grounds of Montpelier. Retired Lt. Col. Peter W. Ogden, Maine state director of Veterans Affairs, will give the keynote address. Free. Those wishing to march in the parade should arrive by 10:30 a.m. and check in with American Legion District 6 Cmdr. Ronald A. Rainfrette, who serves as master of ceremonies. 5/27 BANGOR

BANGOR —The parade route is as follows: Departs from York and Exchange streets and travels across Harlow Street to Central Street, down Central Street to Main Street , through the intersection at Union Street and ends at Davenport Park (Cedar Street). A brief memorial service will take place in the park.

Cyr buses will be available for veterans to ride in the parade if they are unable to walk the half-mile route. The buses also will bring participating veterans back to Exchange Street after the parade.

Walking sticks are available free to Maine veterans who served in one of the four war eras. Those eligible should bring proof of ID and their DD-214 or military ID 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily to Cole Land Transportation Museum at 405 Perry Road in Bangor.

The museum will sponsor its annual Memorial Day program beginning at noon on Perry Road. The Bangor High School Band will play patriotic music, and band boosters will sell hot dogs, hamburgers, soda and whoopie pies.

Veterans attending with their walking stick will receive a free hot dog or hamburger and soda. Children attending the program at the museum will receive a free keepsake American flag with base.

Those who bring lawn chairs will receive upfront seating for the 1 p.m. program featuring Maine’s adjutant general, Brig. Gen. James D. Campbell.

Activities will conclude by 2 p.m., Cole said, and those attending may visit the museum free after the program.

5/27 DEXTER

Memorial services will be held Monday, May 27, at Veterans Memorial Park on Dam Street near the Legion and the VFW. Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs will deliver the memorial address. Musical selections by the Dexter Regional High School band will follow the memorial ceremony.

Local Scout groups, all veterans, active members of the armed forces and any organizations are especially invited to participate in the parade. Vehicles are welcome in the parade for those unable to march. Several convertibles will be available for anyone wishing to honor our veterans by riding in the parade.

The parade will assemble in the municipal parking lot behind Bangor Savings Bank and leave at 10 a.m. entering Lower Main Street, proceed to Main Street to the traffic light; turn onto Church Street and march to Dam Street and Veterans Memorial Park for memorial service. The parade then will reassemble on Dam and Grove streets and march back to the municipal parking lot.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will serve a lunch after the parade at the VFW home on Cedar Street. Call Rodney Giles at 924-3589.

5/27 GARLAND

The public is invited to a service to honor veterans at 8 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Veteran’s Memorial in Garland. Area veterans, as well as those serving in the military, are urged to attend.

5/27 HOLDEN

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 27, at the Veteran’s Memorial located on Route 1A between the town office and Holden Elementary School.

5/27 MONROE

Monroe Lions Club will sponsor a parade at 11 a.m. Memorial Day, May 27, which will travel from Monroe School to Gesner Park, Route 139. There will be a chicken barbecue, homemade french fries, flowers for sale and homemade pies, among other items. There will be games for the children. Rain or shine. Call 525-6621 or 525-4431.

5/27 PROSPECT

Lineup for Memorial Day parade will be at 11:30 a.m. a mile south on Route 1A near Webb’s red barn. Parade starts at noon, proceeds to Maple Grove Cemetery, and ends at the Veteran’s Memorial in the center of town where a ceremony will be held. Call 567-3267.

5/27 ROCKPORT

ROCKPORT, Maine — The annual Rockport Memorial Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m. May 27, starting at the village post office.

5/27 SEARSMONT

Memorial Day parade will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27, beginning at Appleton Ridge Road and the community center on Route 131 and proceeding to the bridge for a wreath laying, and to the memorial at the corner of New England Road and Route 131 for a flag-raising ceremony, a few words from First Selectman Bruce Brierley and singing of the national anthem. Veterans spanning many decades will hold the seats of honor on the viewing platform. The parade then will continue through the town along Route 131 to the post office. Veterans are invited to join the marching, riding or on the viewing stand. Participants should arrive at the community center by 8 a.m. Something for everyone: antique cars, firetrucks, floats, cows, goats, horses. Call 342-5411.
