A boy from Southern Maine, whose appeal for early Christmas cards brought world-wide response, has lost his battle with brain cancer.

According to the Facebook page 'Jacob Thompson's Journey,' the 9-year-old passed away Sunday, following a 4-year battle with neuroblastoma. It's a rare cancer that usually affects children who are 5-years-old or younger.

Jacob's family put out the appeal for the cards when it became clear that he probably wouldn't survive long enough to see December 25th this year. The response was nothing short of amazing, including cards from Arnold Schwarzenegger, and from Maine native Anna Kendrick who let Jacob know she was born at Maine Medical Center, where he spent much of his time. Members of law enforcement from around New England convoyed to the hospital to deliver their cards in person. The family wanted to lift his spirits, but also raise awareness about the disease.

#LiveLikeAPenguin was Jacob's site because he loved penguins, which makes him awesome in my book. (I collect them) His family asks that folks donate to Operation Gratitude, to a penguin rescue group, or by paying it forward in their own communities. They suggest donating blood and platelets, or helping to bring shelter, nourishment, or joy to those in need in honor of Jacob's memory.

Rest in peace, young man. You've earned it.
