Maine DOT Rejects PETA’s Request For Roadside Lobster Memorial

PETA wants to mark the site of a lobster truck accident in Brunswick with a tombstone. However, the proposal has been blocked by state officials.

The Maine Department of Transportation has denied a proposal by PETA to create a roadside memorial for lobsters. A Cozy Harbor Seafood Inc. truck overturned last week in Brunswick, spilling its cargo of about 7,000 lobsters. By the time the spill was cleaned up, most of the lobsters were no longer viable for sale.

The animal rights organization was seeking to create a roadside memorial for the lobsters who lost their lives in the accident. According to WABI, that proposal was rejected by officials, sighting "all forms of signs are prohibited on that stretch of road because it is a controlled access highway."

The proposed five-foot-tall tombstone would have been placed along Route 1 in Brunswick, near the Cook's Corner exit, and would urge passersby to 'Try Vegan.'
