I am always happy to hear that Mainers are acting responsibly in the protection of our wildlife. The folks who took special precautions recently are from Presque Isle and run a ski resort called Nordic Heritage Center.  The venue was hosting the Maine Collegiate Nordic Ski Championships last weekend when one of the participants notices a large hole in the snow.  Upon closer inspection, they realized they were looking in on a mama bear and her cubs. After contacting wildlife management they covered the hole and covered it with snow.

The thought is that when the groomer was going over the trial it disrupted the snow and the subsequent body heat of the bears melted the thinner snow cap.

The race was delayed for a half an hour and rerouted to protect the bears.
