A Maine woman is facing charges in Massachusetts after accidentally leaving her toddler in a shopping cart outside Target.

The 17-month-old child was found sitting in a cart, in the parking lot of the Target store in Easton, Massachusetts. The Boston Globe reports a customer notified store personnel that the child was sitting in the cart with no adults around. The child was taken to a local hospital but appeared to be unharmed.

About an hour later, police say a man called to say the child had been left behind by accident. Now, the boy's mother, who is from Acton, Maine, is facing a charge of abandonment or endangerment of a child. She told authorities that she was with three other people and thought that one of them had put her son in his child safety seat.

The woman's name has not been released in order to protect the identity of the child.
