Great news for Maine’s blueberry growers, Maine’s pretty little fruit has once again been found to be tops on health benefits.

In a recent study placed them top of the list when it comes to antioxidant activity - compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables.  This report in the Daily Mail quotes findings from Scientists at the US Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Center among other universities who placed blueberries at the top of the crops for mopping up harmful by-products of metabolism in the blood, known as free radicals. So aptly put, Maine growers are officially in the business of producing a "super" superfood.

So what do these scientists list as the benefits?

Blueberries have compounds in them that:

  • Reduce harmful cholesterol levels
  • Prevent bladder infections
  • Reduce signs of aging
  • protect against cancer
  • Reduce rapid tumor growth
  • Aid your memory
  • Help with Constipation
  • Prevent Bladder infections
  • Reduce risk of heart disease
  • Lower cholesterol
  • High Blood pressure
  • Help with night vision
  • Great for pregnant women
  • Are also a good source of fiber
