Maine’s Turkey Hunt Begins

Joan Wynn – ThinkStock

Turkey hunting season begins today in some areas of Maine.

But, due to the harsh winter, state officials have “halted” the hunt in wildlife management districts 1-6 in northern Maine.  Turkeys normally breed and nest in March, and much of northern Maine was still under a blanket of snow.

Turkey hunting season is now open for the rest of the state.  Hunting is legal from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset.  Hunters can take two turkeys in districts 7 and 9-29, there is a one bird limit in district 8.  The hunt is limited to bearded turkeys only.

A turkey hunting permit is the same $20 cost for both residents and non-residents. To find out more on Maine’s spring wild turkey hunting season and where Maine’s WIldlife Districts are go HERE.

Be careful, and gobble gobble!
