A worker in East Waterboro was crushed to death by excavation debris on Friday, officials said.

David Egan, 49, of Waterboro was crushed by the debris after opening a trailer at G and F Septic on Sokokis Trail, said York County Sheriff William King.

The debris included large tree trunks and other objects, King said.

The incident was reported at about 11: 15 a.m. King said Egan died shortly after the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Representatives of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called to the scene to investigate, standard practice following a deadly industrial accident.

The investigation is ongoing.
