State police say a New Hampshire man has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while standing on the side of I-95 in Pittsfield Sunday evening.

Dustin Smithurst, 27, of Gorham died during the night at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, a Monday release from the Maine Department of Public Safety said.

Trooper David Powser said Smithurst's car skidded into the median and struck some trees at about 5:45 p.m.

A wrecker had stopped to assist him, and as Smithhurst was standing along the side of the northbound passing lane, he was struck by a Hannaford tractor-trailer truck driven by Adrien Doyon, 54, of Saco, the release said.

Smithurst was first taken to the hospital in Pittsfield and then transported to Easter Maine Medical Center, where he later died.

No charges were filed against the truck driver, but Powser said his crash report will be reviewed by the district attorney's office after it has been completed.
