Police in Dexter evacuated a half-dozen homes and shut down Maple Avenue during a standoff Sunday morning.

The wife of 39-year-old George Phillips says her husband shoved her and put a gun to her head before she and her son escaped their home around 2:30 a.m.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the two hid in the woods until the sun came up and then went to a friend’s home to call 911, sparking the standoff situation.

Police say Phillips later exited the home with his 16-year-old daughter standing in front of him and her two teenage friends at his sides, essentially using them as shields while officers aimed their weapons at Phillips.

The standoff ended peacefully with Phillips being taken into custody around 9:40 a.m.

He was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
