The man accused of killing Schenck High School student Joyce McLain in 1980 pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.

Philip Scott Fournier, 55, of East Millinocket was arrested March 4 at his home and charged with intentional or knowing murder and depraved indifference murder.

Superior Court Justice William Anderson on March 7 ordered that Fournier be held without bail at the Penobscot County Jail.

At the end of the month, he was indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury on one count of murder.

Fournier’s mother and stepfather testified in court Tuesday that years ago Fournier admitted to killing McLain, reports the Bangor Daily News.

McLain went out jogging on Aug. 8, 1980 and didn't return. Two days later, her body was found in a clearing near Schenck High School. Police said her head and neck had been struck with a blunt object.
