Last night in Portland a 19 year old man tried to hop a freight train that was in motion and the man's leg was severed.  The incident happened around 6:30 by Portland's Riverton School which is off Forest Avenue on Harris Avenue.  The tracks at the point run parallel to the Riverton Trail which is popular with walkers and bikers.

The man was alone at the time. Neighbors heard the man's screams for help and called 911.

The Boston and Maine Railroad Police will take over the investigation from the Portland Police Department.

It is illegal to walk on railroad tracks here in Maine.
