I don't know about you but I love a bargain and May is a busy month for shopping with Mother's Day, Memorial Day and countless graduation ceremonies.  With so many reasons to celebrate, May can be an expensive month.  Here are some ways to shop smart in May with things to buy:

  • If you're in the market for a new mattress, May is the month to act.  Memorial Day is when retailers are looking to boost sales, which means bigger discounts on big ticket items, including mattresses.
  • Refrigerators are another big ticket item that retailers mark down during Memorial Day sales.  May is also the month when refrigerator manufacturers introduce new models, meaning even bigger discounts on older models.
  • Cookware makes a popular gift in May, and most offer sales on cooking products.  Some stores will offer up to 80 percent off on cookware in May.
  • Since May is the month of outdoor parties, most stores stock up on grilling charcoal, paper plates, plastic utensils and napkins.  By the time Memorial Day rolls around, most stores are looking to unload excess inventory and will start offering big deals on party supplies.
  • As clothing manufacturers roll out their summer lines, stores are forced to mark down spring apparel to make room for new inventory.  Expect discounts from 40 percent off to 80 percent off.
