The newly refurbished road has been a concern since the application of a sealant in humid weather last August.

Today, the Maine Department of Transportation will begin spreading an iron oxide grit to the recently repaved portion of Route 3 on the way to Bar Harbor, after numerous complaints of vehicles slipping and sliding and a major accident involving a dump leaving the road and crashing into a garage.

The grit that will be spread is usually used to polish glass and soft metals and will adhere to the asphalt, which should increase traction.

Local officials, project contractors and the Maine Department of Transportation will continue to monitor the situation.  The Route 3 project is due to be completed sometime this coming spring.
