In the past three years there's been 94 vehicle crashes at the Interstate's Exit 187 at Hogan Road in Bangor.  The Maine Department of Transportation is thinking about doing something novel there in the future.

The concept is called a "Diverging Diamond", and it would be the first of its kind built in Maine.

According to the MDOT's website, an average of 35,000 vehicles use that area everyday, making it Bangor's busiest intersection, and a Diverging Diamond would reduce crashes there by approximately 50%. It would increase mobility and reduce congestion, and a dedicated protected "path"  for bicyclists and pedestrians would be constructed within the width of the bridge itself.

Tonight, between 6 and 8 at the Mathieu Auditorium in Eastern Maine Community College’s Schoodic Hall at 354 Hogan Road, folks from the MDOT will unleash a presentation upon anyone who's interested, and take your questions.

According to an article in the Bangor Daily News, the project would use the existing bridge that was originally built back in 1960 and then widened in 1983. Construction would begin in 2018 or 2019.
