Winter Harbor Police

Two men who are suspected of killing a dog in Winter Harbor have turned themselves in to authorities.

Winter Harbor Police had issued arrest warrants for Nathan Burke of Hancock and Justin Chipman of Steuben in connection with an incident at a local residence. Officials say the two men are accused of burglarizing the home of Phillip Torrey, stealing and heavily damaging his SUV, and killing his dog. The body of his pug, Franky, washed up on a private beach. Officials say it appeared the dog had been badly beaten and shot before being wrapped in garbage bags.

Burke and Chipman work as stern men on Torrey's boat and are people he says he considered friends. The dog went missing while Torrey was out of town last week, and the dog's remains were discovered on Thursday night. Police have charged the men with theft, burglary, aggravated cruelty to animals, aggravated criminal mischief, and unauthorized use of property.

They're expected to make their first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
