More Details Released in Double Fatal Crash [UPDATE]

State Police on Monday said a Carmel man caused the fatal, head-on crash that claimed the lives of two men Sunday night on Interstate 95 in Hampden.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said late Monday afternoon that 55-year-old Richard Holden from Carmel caused the crash that also killed 39-year-old James Curtis of Knox.

Holden, who was going the wrong way in the southbound lane at the time of the crash, was driving with a suspended license, according to police.

McCausland said Holden was driving his SUV in the southbound lane and, according to witnesses, stopped and made an abrupt turn and started to drive in the opposite direction. His vehicle struck Curtis' pickup truck head on. The wreckage caused the southbound lanes near the Hampden-Newburgh line to be closed for several hours.

Blood alcohol tests will be completed, as troopers continue to attempt to determine why Holden turned his SUV around on the highway.

Troopers had attempted to stop the erratic driver before the crash happened.
