I guess I knew the Census looked at many different statistics from the data they garner from us every so often.  However when they broke this one down I found myself surprised…not that I didn’t know there were people out there who make buckets more money than I ever will but the fact they seem to like living in places I have never heard of, even here in New England.  Including, I am embarrassed, to say Cumberland Center, Maine.

Here is their rundown of how the data is tabulated:

One of the many types of geography the Census Bureau tabulates figures for are “places.” These are either legally incorporated cities or towns or Census-designated statistical equivalents. In this map, we consider places with at least 1,000 residents, according to the 2008-2012 American Community Survey.

Using income estimates from the ACS, we found the place with the highest median household income in each state. The map shows where the affluent towns are, and the median income in each:

See if you have heard of any of these that made the list in New England:

  • Cumberland Center, Maine – Median Income $101,375
  • Jericho, Vermont - Median Income $78,618
  • Dover, Massachusetts - Median Income $185,515
  • South Hooksett, New Hampshire - Median Income $93,371
  • Darien, Connecticut - Median Income $200,724
  • Ashaway, Rhode Island - Median Income $84,500
