We didn't realize that black dogs had their own national day, and when we did we still had no idea why.  We do now.

National Black Dog Day happens every October 1st, and it was set up to bring attention to canines with a darker shade who are usually the last to be adopted.  What that also means is that black dogs at shelters across the country are also being euthanized more so than those of a lighter color.

So, let's keep these animals in mind today, and maybe even think about adopting one at one of the local shelters in the area, like these:

The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield.
