Along with the new Maine laws that go into effect this Thursday is a brand new name for U.S. Route 1A between Brewer and Ellsworth.  That section of the highway will be called the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway, a fitting tribute to our men and women of the military who fought and died during this three year long conflict.

The Korean War began on June 25th, 1950 and ended on July 27th, 1953.  Thirty three thousand six hundred and eighty six Americans died in this war, including two hundred and forty two Maine citizens.  Their names and towns are listed here:  http://www.archives.gov/research/military/korean-war/casualty-lists/me-alpha.pdf

So, beginning this Thursday, take a moment or two during the twenty six mile commute between Ellsworth and Brewer to remember those that fought and gave their lives for freedom on the Korean Peninsula.  Look for the new highway signs identifying the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway, and reflect.
