Several members of the New York City Fire Department will be in Bangor on Tuesday to present a local business with a very special shadowbox. The display will include hallowed 9/11 steel from Ground Zero, as a way to thank the business owner for his participation in a unique program.

The FDNY members will be acting as representatives of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is an organization that was started in memory of a fallen 9/11 firefighter. They will present the shadowbox to Carpet One of Bangor, store owner Dennis Payson, and the store's customers as a way to thank them for their support of the foundation's 'Building America's Bravest' program.

The Bangor Fire Department and other area fire departments will be in attendance to express their support and gratitude to the program, which builds high-tech 'smart homes' for service members returning from war who have been catastrophically injured. In October of last year, Maine veteran Travis Mills,  who was injured by an explosive device, moved into one of these smart homes in the town of Manchester.

The presentation this week at Carpet One is a way to thank the company which, in partnership with its manufacturing partner Mohawk, has committed to providing flooring materials and installations for 46 of these 'smart homes.' In addition, customers at the stores are invited to make a personal contribution with a goal of building at least two more 'smart homes.'

Payson told the Bangor Fire Department that the company is 'humbled and honored' to have the representatives from Tunnel to Towers and the FDNY travel to Maine to make the presentation.

"In fact, we are the ones who are thankful to them for their dedication and service. That's why we are so thrilled to part of this impactful program that helps military heroes who have sustained the most devastating injuries."

The Stephen Siller Foundation is named in honor of New York Firefighter Stephen Siller, who was killed during rescue efforts on 9/11. The Foundation is best known for its annual Tunnel to Towers Run at Ground Zero in New York City, but is also committed to building specially adapted 'smart homes' for the most seriously injured U.S. Service personnel through its 'Building for America's Bravest' Program.
