Woman Slain in Old Town, Police Shoot + Kill Suspect

Police on Wednesday shot and killed a man during a standoff at the scene of a domestic violence homicide in Old Town. The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. after the man called police to say he had stabbed his girlfriend to death.

Police on Thursday identified the woman as 35-year-old April Haskell. The man was identified 28-year-old Christopher Ouellette. Both are from the Old Town area. They reportedly had lived in the Main Street apartment for about two months.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said police arrived at the apartment and began negotiations with Ouellette. During those negotiations, Ouellette allowed the two children, ages 2 and 4, out of the apartment. From there, the siutuation went downhill, McCausland said.

“Things got very tense,” said McCausland. The woman’s body was discovered after police gained entry to the apartment.

Colonel Robert Williams, the chief of the Maine State Police, identified the trooper involved in the shooting as Barry Meserve, a 15-year veteran of the force. As is standard procedure, Meserve was placed on administrative leave with pay. The Attorney General’s Office will investigate the incident.

Both children have been placed in the custody of relatives, according to police.

Autopsies are scheduled Thursday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

News director Susan Patten contributed to this report.
