If you’re like me you’ve been watch the state workers out in the Penobscot with the big equipment removing the dams in the river. Well, here is your chance to enjoy the fruits of that labor by participating in the Penobscot River Whitewater Nationals Regatta beginning this Friday, Jul 24th.

The course will run down the Penobscot River between Old Town and Eddington. The event actually covers five days running July 22-26. The event is being put on by the Penobscot Nation to rejuvenate and increase your appreciation of the  historically important and beautiful 9.5 mile section of river, returned to its free-flowing state following removal of the Great Works and Veazie Dams.

How fast you ask?? According to their webpage:  the race course includes three Class II-III rapids, numerous rips and quick water. Many of the races will pass through Veazie The Penobscot River Restoration Trust invites on-lookers to view these events at the newly restored shoreline at the site of the former Veazie Dam. Suggested viewing areas are at Broad & Brown Streets in Bradley. These will be best places for the “sprints” on Saturday. Race viewing open hours are as follows: Thursday 7/23 10:30AM-1:30PM Friday 7/24 10:30AM-1:30PM Sunday 7/26 9:30- 12:00PM

There are other land locked events to coordinate with this Regatta.
