Police Shooting Involved Deputy and Woman With Homemade Weapon

The Penobscot County Sheriff's office has released details about an officer-related shooting this morning in Carmel. Officials say the injured woman advanced on a deputy with a homemade weapon.

In a press release this afternoon Penobscot County Chief Deputy William Sheehan said the deputy responded to reports of a disruptive female pedestrian just after 9:00 Sunday morning. The woman was reported to be causing damage and threatening passing motorists on Route 2 in Carmel.

When the deputy arrived, he was confronted by the suspect. She was carrying a homemade weapon and advanced toward the deputy, at which point the deputy shot her. The woman has been taken to the hospital where she is receiving medical care. There's no word on her condition or her identity.

Chief Deputy Sheehan says an investigation is underway by the Attorney General's Office, Maine State Police, and the Penobscot County Sheriff's office. No further details are expected to be released today.
