The Bangor Waterfront might look very different soon.

Yesterday, FTL Design Engineering Studio presented to the city council’s Business and Economic Development Committee. The plans find balance between the needs of the concert venue and allowing more public access.

FTL Design is based out of New York and specializes in designing performance venues and transportation hubs. They call for a permanent covered concert venue with seating for 6,500 fans. Also a multiuse green space would provide more seating for a concert capacity of about 12,000 people. It could also remain open to the public during smaller shows.

The covering would be an acoustic shell and a permanent tensile canopy. Some residents have complained that a roof over the venue would obstruct their view of the river. They also complain about the sound. However, the only way the sound can be contained is with using a canopy.

The idea of containing the sound with a permanent roof structure stemmed from the sound studies conducted by Acentech last season. With the purposed structure sound levels could be cut in half.

Other suggested improvements include a community plaza with its own smaller performance venue, improved trails, more trees and vegetation, public art, shaded areas and signs in French (and English) to direct visitors to other businesses and destinations in Bangor.

The plans also suggest widening a portion of Railroad Street for food trucks to set up. Also additional entrances to the waterfront along Main Street and a ticket kiosk near Main Street.

Best for last. Drum roll please...PERMANENT BATHROOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
