'They Came From Away' is the theme of this year's River City Cinema Series. The free movies are shown outside every Friday night. Grab your lawn chair and join the fun!

River City Cinema organizer and Bangor City Councilor Gibran Graham says the movie showings are often an interactive experience, like last year when the theme was musicals. He said when they showed the movie 'Grease' everyone in the audience had to sing all the songs!

I predict this year's line-up will encourage plenty of audience participation too, with science fiction films gracing the screen. From the cheesy effects of old classics like 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' to 'ET,' there will be plenty of opportunities for fun!

Because the 4th of July falls on a Friday this year, organizers decided to add an extra film to the line-up. Downtown fun on the 4th will include a Bangor Band Concert on the waterfront, followed by the River City Cinema's showing of the Will Smith alien film 'Independence Day.' The movie will pause for fireworks and then resume once they're done. What a fun way to spend the 4th!

There's no charge for the movies and they have some concessions available for $2 each. But you can also bring your own food if you want! Just bring something to sit on and pick your spot before the start of each movie, which happens around sundown, 8:30 or so each Friday night in Pickering Square in Downtown Bangor.
