I cannot express my sorrow at reporting that comic genius Robin Williams has died. The man who brought us so much laughter apparently lost his battle with depression.
The Los Angeles Times is reporting it’s suspected that Williams died of a suicide. Entertainment Weekly says he’d been very depressed, of late. And the Sheriff’s office says it’s believed that he died of asphyxiation. This, of course, is all speculation at this point.
It’s tough for me to wrap my head around this, although I know that many comedians have a dark and often depressed side. If ever there was a man who exuded life and laughter, it was Williams. Of course, he could also play dark roles very convincingly. But no one could do improv the way Robin could.
I worked at a movie theater the year ‘Moscow on the Hudson’ came out. So many people came out to see it and then left before it was over. See, they expected that, since it was a Williams movie, it would be funny! But Williams overcame that prejudice and was accepted as a serious and versatile actor.
For me, Williams was my favorite. You know that question, ‘Who would you most like to have dinner with?’ My answer was always Robin Williams. Imagine spending a meal watching that amazing mind work!
Rest in peace, Mr. Williams. You will be sorely missed. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.
