I found this on Facebook today and it had a ring of truth to it and a butt load of scientific proof to back it up. The story started with when in 2011, the Finish Tourist Board ran a campaign that used silence as a marketing ‘product’ and a valuable on at that.

Now when I think of quiet and restorative time my mind goes right into the Maine woods. So what about the quiet makes you smarter you ask to the point that an entire country has makes it their brand?

Lifehack goes on to cite scientific research that shows the benefit to your brain when you find and enjoy quiet.

  •  A 2013 study on mice published in the journal Brain, Structure and Function showed that only two hours of quiet stimulated the brain to grow.
  • A 2001 study defined a “default mode” showed that when allowed to be free of noise the brain will do internal checks and balances that help you physically and emotionally.
  •  A study that was published in 2002 in Psychological Science (Vol. 13, No. 9) showed how quiet can relieve stress
  • Other studies show how quiet can enhance our cognitive ability. The cognitive functions most strongly affected by noise are reading attention, memory and problem solving.
