It was a happy ending on Tuesday when two teenagers were found safe and sound, after spending a sub-zero night lost in the woods. Now, the Warden Service has released photos of the journey the young men took to safety.

Ty Howard-Gotto and Jonah May, both 15-years-old from Rhode Island, left the town of Mexico about 7:30 Monday evening, headed to Ty's grandfather's camp in Andover. They were due to arrive at 10 p.m. When they failed to show up, family members called authorities. Wardens began to search sometime after midnight and the boys were located at around 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Warden Corporal John MacDonald says the teens missed a turn and ended up crossing Devil's Den Road and headed west toward the Sawyer Notch area. While traveling on a groomed trail, Gotto turned onto the South Sawyer Trail, which is not maintained and got the sled stuck in the snow.

An attempt to soak a sock in gasoline in order to start a fire didn't work, so the boys started to walk, finally finding a shed on the shore of Richardson Lake. Inside the shed was a go-cart with a full tank of gas. The young men used the gas from the go-cart to build a fire and, once they were warm, climbed into the back of the cart where they slept til morning.

When they woke up, the teens managed to get across the lake to the South Arm Road, where they were picked up by a passing motorist. Wardens say the teenagers were extremely lucky that neither suffered hypothermia. The boys were hungry, but healthy.

This afternoon, the Warden Service released these photos of the journey the young men took to safety. They were lucky, but also used their heads to keep warm and stay safe. You have to love a happy ending!
