The Piscataquis County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page today that the search for accused murderer Robert Burton is continuing. Officials went on to say that a couple of rumors about yesterday's search were false.

Officials negated rumors that were circulating on Monday of a standoff with Burton and shots being fired. They say the search is continuing and no gunfire has been exchanged. Maine State Police, Sheriff's Deputies, Game Wardens, Forest Rangers, and others are working together to try and locate Burton and place him in custody.

In the meantime, officials urge Mainers to use caution. Keep your doors locked, especially when you're not home. Take your keys out of your vehicle and lock it up, as well, since Burton may be looking for a means of transportation. His Toyota Tacoma pickup was located yesterday, along with a Chevrolet pickup that was stolen Sunday from Herrick Construction. The Chevy was discovered Monday by a Forest Ranger, mired in the mud.

Burton has been formally charged with murder for the death of his former girlfriend, Stephanie Gebo. Her body was found by her children in their Parkman home on Friday. He has a long criminal history, including convictions for kidnapping, terrorizing, and assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious or who may have information about the whereabouts of Robert Burton is asked to call the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Office at 564-3304 or call 911. Burton is considered armed and dangerous so residents who see him are urged not to approach him.
