Where does Maine rate within the 50 states as being one of the best places to retire, and, what town within Maine is the best?

Bankrate.com, has ranked all 50 states according to their cost of living, crime rate, health care quality, state and local tax burden, personal well-being for seniors and weather.

Overall, Maine ranks #12 as the best state to retire in.  Maine scored well in the "crime rate" and "health care quality" categories, but it ranked 37th overall in "tax rate"  and 38th in "cost of living."

Here's the top 5 best states to retire to according to Bankrate.com.

  1. Wyoming
  2. Colorado
  3. Utah
  4. Idaho
  5. Virginia

Arkansas was at the bottom of the list, with a very high score in "crime rate" and "community well being."  The bottom five are:  Arkansas, New York, Alaska, West Virginia and Louisiana.

Meanwhile, another company called SmartAsset.com ranked the best cities by state to retire in.  They used three categories as their criteria; tax-friendliness, medical care and social life.

Here are the best cities or towns in Maine to retire in according to SmartAsset.com:

  1. Kennebunk
  2. Belfast
  3. Rockland
  4. Topsham
  5. Brunswick
  6. Houlton
  7. Bath
  8. Brewer
  9. Westbrook
  10. Waterville
