Speed limits on some Maine highways have increased by 5 miles per hour. New signs are going up today to mark the change.

Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt said today that he has approved the increase on specific portions of I-95, I-295, I-395, and Route 1. The change is in answer to legislation that gave the Department of Transportation the right to increase interstate speed limits with the approval of the State Police.

Speed limits will increase by 5 miles per hour on I-395 in Bangor, and on I-295 in from Tukey's Bridge in Portland to Gardiner. In addition, limits will increase by 5 mph on sections of Interstate 95 from Augusta to Waterville and from Fairfield to Bangor.

The signs are going up and the speed limit changes take effect immediately.
