A huge donation was accepted by the Bangor Police Department in honor of their late chief.

The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation donated $25,000 in memory of former police Chief Don Winslow. The Bangor City Council voted to accept the grant last night. The money will be used to purchase 82 new police jackets and hats, as well as 70 blood control kits.

According to the BDN, Bangor police officers are wearing four different kinds of jackets. All of them are not adequate for the freezing winter temperatures officers work in on a daily basis.

The new coats will two layers of protection. A removable outer shell will protect officers from freezing weather. A lighter inner shell can be used to keep officers warm in the spring and fall months.

Bangor City Council also voted Monday to accept another $25,000 grant. The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant will assist in purchasing radar and night optics equipment for the Bangor Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

Chief Don Winslow passed away earlier this summer from terminal cancer. He was 57 years old and spent nearly 28 years with the Bangor Police Department.
