Super Rare Lobster Caught By Local Lobsterman…And Then Let Go

I was cruising Facebook this morning and saw this post at like, 6:45a.m. from Facebook friend Mike Billings. I know Mike a little bit in "real life" too, as we run in some of the same musical circles. Mike is also a good old, Downeast Maine Lobsterman. I see him post photos all the time of cool crustaceans that he catches, but the lobster he caught off Stonington this morning, was over the top.

I immediately hit him up and asked if i could share the story with you guys here on our website, and share the photos, which he enthusiastically responded to. So between early this morning, and now....the photos have gone completely viral. It's been shared by the New York Times, NewsCenter Maine, local papers...everywhere. In a matter of a few hours.

The part of the story that really made me the happiest though, is that Mike decided to let this mega-rare sea bug go right back where it came from. He didn't see any reason to save it, cook it, or donate it to science. And, it was too small, so he just put it right back in the sea where it will hopefully continue on eating whatever lobsters eat, and making little lobsters, or it will become supper for some crazy scary sea monster that eats lobsters alive.

Either way....what a find! And props to Mike for doing, at least what I consider, the right thing. Now that said......I want lobster.
