Being a bit of a word nerd I was taken a back today when I realized how not dealing with a teen every day had put me out of the lingo loop. Of course, teen speak is nothing new: Every generation has had its own language. Just consider how the word “great” has morphed through the years: boss, groovy, rad, bad, the bomb. Now today I find out  it’s “lit.”

So if you want to be ready and hip when the family pops in for the Holidays here is a crash course in teen speak for 2016:

  • It’s Lit – it’s cool, it’s good
  • I’m weak – That was funny
  • On fleek, on point – Nailed it
  • BAE - Term of endearment, “Before Anyone Else”
  • Ship – Short for relationship, if you “ship” two people, you want them to make it as a couple
  • GOAT – Greatest of all time
  • Squad – Your group of friends
  • Fam – The friends you are closest to
  • Woke – Being aware of issues
  • High-key – People say high key when they are about to say something they want everyone to know about
  • Low-key – People say low key when they are about to say something they don't want everyone to know about
  • Throw shade – Give someone a dirty look or say something nasty
  • Straight fire – Hot/trendy
  • TBH- To be honest
  • Thirsty – desperate
  • Hundo P – 100 percent, confirming something
  • Sus – Suspect, when something is shady
  • v. – Very

Now all you have to do is practice and you'll be on fleek and considered the GOAT of your squad, it's lit.  Seriously, I'm weak.
