A teenager is in critical condition after slipping beneath the surface while swimming. He was out boating with two friends when the incident happened.

Corporal John MacDonald with the Maine Warden Service said in a press release that a Chesterville teen is in critical condition after an incident on Great Pond in the town of Rome. The male, whose identity has not been released, was swimming with two other teens near Crooked Island and went below the surface.

After he was recovered by his friends, a nearby off-duty nurse was alerted and performed lifesaving measures. The teen was transported by Delta Ambulance to Maine General Hospital in Augusta.

The three young people had been boating and moored near Crooked Island. All three attempted to swim form the moored boat back to the Island when the incident happened. One of the teens was wearing a lifejacket. Maine State Police and Belgrade Fire & Rescue assisted. The Warden Service continues to investigate.
