This Saturday youngsters between the ages of 10 and 16 get their own special day to hit the woods and bag a deer!

In a Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife press release, Governor Paul LePage said, “Youth day is an excellent way to introduce a young hunter to a tradition such as deer hunting.” Hunting is not only a Maine tradition, it also teaches children conservation, patience, responsibility and respect for our natural resources.”

Young people from Maine or out of state who possess a "junior hunting license" can hunt deer this Saturday, October 25th,  if accompanied by an adult or guardian with a valid Maine hunting license, or  with someone who has successfully completed a hunter's safety course.  While hunting, the accompanying adult cannot possess a firearm.

The junior hunter on this day can take one deer of either sex only in those Wildlife Management Districts where Any Deer permits were issued. In WMDs where there are no Any Deer permits issued, hunters may only take an antlered deer.

Deer hunting season here in Maine officially begins for the rest of us on Saturday November 1st.
