Join me this afternoon high atop the Thomas Hill Standpipe in Bangor! The Bangor Water District only opens the standpipe four times a year, and today is the summer tour. Even more exciting, this is the sunset tour, so the views will be amazing!

I took all of these pictures from the observation deck. I've been to the top many times and I have to say the view is unmatched. Beautiful!

A few fun facts you may not know about the Thomas Hill Standpipe....

  • It's a national landmark
  • Built in 1897, it's still in use today!
  • The shell is 110 feet high and 85 feet in diameter with a 38 foot flagpole at the top
  • During World War II, the Standpipe was painted, from grey to olive drab, to disguise it from enemy pilots
  • The Bangor Water District keeps the observation deck closed, except for once each season when they open it to the public.
  • It's 100 steps to the top, with a couple of places on the way where you can step out of the way and catch your breath
  • It's not handicapped accessible
  • Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult

The Thomas Hill Standpipe will be open tonight from 5 to 9 for the Summer Sunset Tour. I hope you stop by!
