A 2-year-old boy was killed Monday in Burnham when a tractor driven by his grandfather accidentally backed over him.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the accident happened at the grandfather's home on the Pond Road in Burnham. Raymond Rayeski Sr., age 54, was watching his grandson in the late morning and the two were working outside with a tractor around a woodpile on the property. Raymond Rayeski III was on the tractor with his grandfather for a time, but decided he wanted to go play.

The grandfather continued his work with the tractor and was cleaning up debris, dumping the items a short distance away. Police say it appears the boy was running after the man while the tractor was backing up, and he didn't see the boy in time to stop. The elder Rayeski drove his grandson to the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield where he later died.

Detectives have determined the incident was a tragic accident and no charges are expected to be filed.
