Goodbye to the toll takers! The next time you travel on the Massachusetts turnpike you'll notice things a little less personalized.

Beginning this Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will begin collecting tolls via electronic gantries.  What's a gantry you wonder?  It's a tall overhead structure that supports both cameras and sensors. There will also be sensors in the pavement too directly underneath. You may or may not notice them, as they more than likely will be nowhere near where the current toll booths are located.

Vehicles with EZ-Pass will automatically be detected and charged. Vehicles without EZ-Pass will be recognized and the registrant will be mailed a bill, otherwise known as the pay-by-plate process.

If you prefer not to use EZ-Pass, prepare to pay 30 to 60 cents more per toll.

The State of Massachusetts will begin tearing down the old toll booths soon and they should be entirely gone by the end of next year.

Could the Maine Turnpike be next?
