What makes an item and icon? It may be the first of its kind, it may blow all previous competition out of the water or it may just be so darned creative or innovative that we just can’t help ourselves. Want to see if you played a part in their popularity? Recently 247Wallst.com printed a list of our most popular products ever. These are products that have transformed their industry and defined business for decades.

Here are the top 10 best selling products of all time:

  1. PlayStation by Sony.  Released with a 32 bit processor this was the most powerful gaming system in the world at the time. More than 70 million units were sold before the PlayStation 2 was introduced.
  2. Lipitor by Pfizer.  This drug was created to lower a person’s bad cholesterol or LDL. I saw a report the other day on 20/20 saying that many folks were using this as an excuse to make poor food choices and gaining weight. Interesting.
  3. Toyota Corolla.  These cars became available in the US back in 1968.  According to Toyota more than 40.7 million of these cars have been sold.  They attribute it’s success to the Corolla’s reliability and affordability.
  4. Star Wars by George Lucas.  The original trilogy grossed 2.4 billion and the franchise was just sold to Disney for 4.6 billion.  Guess that kind of sums it up.
  5. iPad by Apple. They say more than 211 million iPads have been sold since its introduction in 2010.
  6. Mario Brothers by Nintendo. According to the company as of 2011 more than 262 million units of the core Mario Bros. games have been sold.  Guinness Book of World Records did a reader poll of 13,000 readers and crowned Mario the top video character of all time.

According to michaeljackson.com, a website run by Sony Music and owned by the Michael Jackson record label, 70 million copies of the album have been sold since its release in 1982, although various sources have estimated that as many as 110 million copies have been sold.
  8. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling published by Scholastic.  With about 450 million copies sold in 73 different languages not only is Harry Potter the bestselling book series ever but it also made Rowling the highest paid author in the world.  Sorry Steve.
  9. iPhone by Apple.  With the exception of a brief time the iPhone has reigned as the bestselling smart phone on the market since it was introduced.
  10. Rubik’s Cube by Seven Towns Ltd. Now you may ask how a Rubik’s Cube could have possibly out sold a toy like Barbie or Monopoly? The answer is, it only has as a single toy not a brand or series.  To this day it remains the bestselling single toy boasting  over 350 million sold since 1980.
