A tractor trailer driver who struck a State Police cruiser from behind is facing charges. The accident happened this morning on I-295 in Richmond. The truck's driver wasn't injured but the Trooper has been hospitalized.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that 56-year-old Gusan Yedic of Yorktown Heights, NY was summonsed for the violation after his tractor trailer slammed into the rear of a State Police cruiser. The law enforcement SUV was stopped, with its blue lights on, in the breakdown lane.

Trooper Greg Stevens had just checked on another tractor trailer that had been stopped along the road. Moments after Stevens returned to his cruiser and after that rig had merged back into traffic, the cruiser was struck from behind.

The 17 year State Police veteran is being treated at Maine Medical Center for broken ribs, neck and leg injuries. The 2015 Ford SUV was demolished. The tractor trailer, owned byYamamoto Carrier Inc. of Buffalo Grove, NY was destroyed by fire.

Maine's 'Move Over Law' says motorists should merge to the left or slow down when an emergency vehicle or wrecker is alongside a road with its lights on.
