A tractor trailer crashed Tuesday night after swerving to avoid hitting a moose. The rig was headed from Northern Maine to Connecticut with a load of potatoes.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says troopers responded at about 10:17 Tuesday night to a report of a tractor trailer crash on I-295 in Richmond. And AJA Go Transportation truck loaded with potoates had been traveling south when it went off the median side, traveling several hundred feet before striking a cross-over embankment and coming to rest on the other side.

The driver, Marc Benoit, age 63, said he swerved the truck to avoid a moose in the southbound lane. He suffered minor injuries to his legs and was taken to Mid Coast Hospital.

In the past week, my parents spotted a moose next to the highway when they were traveling from Aroostook County, and my son nearly hit a black bear in the road in the Orono/Old Town area. Keep your eyes open because the warm weather has Maine's wild animals on the move!
