One of the most traveled bridges in Downeast Maine is going to get a facelift.

The Union River Bridge in Ellsworth currently sports deep ruts from years of use by heavy vehicles and provides a very bumpy ride to the thousands of cars, trucks and bikes that dump into Ellsworth from Route 1 and the Surry road.

That's about to change.

Lane Construction will soon begin the work of grinding up the old pavement, smoothing out the under layer, and then repaving it all the way to the traffic light at Main, Water and State Streets.

According to an article in the Ellsworth American, the way that particular traffic light senses vehicles will change too.  Currently the  sensors are within the pavement, and it will be moving to a camera based system.

The plans according to the Maine Department Of Transportation call for the work to be started soon and completed by October 22nd. Work will be done at night between 7PM and 6AM.
