People volunteer for a variety of reasons, and whatever that reason may be, the United Way is looking for you!

It’s the United Way’s 5th Annual Day of Caring which teams up volunteers with community projects.

As the saying goes, many hands make quick work and the United Way is hoping to recruit at least 100 volunteers October 25th and 26th and there are all kinds of projects you can help with this year.

“This annual event not only assists area non-profits with immediate needs, it shows the spirit and power community members coming together to help one another in Eastern Maine,” states United Way of Eastern Maine CEO, John Kuropchack.

This year as many as 50 volunteers will be need to clean up a section of Bangor known as “The Pines” which is an area of land between I-95 and Hammond Street.

It has been used, especially during warm weather, by people experiencing homelessness and frequently dealing with chronic addictions. The goal of this project is to clean up “The Pines” and make it a safe area for the public to enjoy.

Other projects include the restoration of a portion of Bangor/Orono’s Bog Walk. In partnership with Maine Conservation Corps and the hard work of twelve volunteers, unsafe portions of the bog walk will be removed which will then be replaced, ensuring the continued safe usage of this treasured recreational and educational resource.

Additional efforts include painting and weeding of a garden at the Bangor Hilltop School, staining picnic tables for My Friend’s Place and Memory Joggers, as well as yard work and painting for Wellspring, a residential program for men and women.

If you can help you’re encouraged to contact Community Impact Manager, Sarita Field, for sign up information at saritaf@unitedwayem.org or (207) 941-2800.

United Way hosts www.volunteermaine.org  a free on-line volunteer- matching website on an on-going basis too.
