39 years ago today, the King of Rock and Roll came to my hometown and gave fans the thrill of of a lifetime. On May 24, 1977, Elvis Presley performed for a full house at the Augusta Civic Center. Lucky for us, we can watch this rare 8mm footage from that epic night in the Capital City! I was 10 years old and didn't have a ticket to the show. Fortunately, my next door neighbor's Dad knew people at the venue. While he couldn't get us in for the concert, he was able get us in that afternoon so we could check out the stage set-up. Lights, big speakers, the drum-kit, and mic stands...WOW! Especially that mic stand in middle. That one belonged to the KING! Even though I didn't get to see this historic concert, I'll never forget our afternoon visit of stage set-up in the empty Augusta Civic Center. A plaque with the etched image of Elvis hangs in the lobby there to memorialize his only Maine appearance.

He was scheduled to do two shows in Portland at the CCCC on August 17 and 18. Elvis died of a heart attack at Graceland in Memphis the day before he was supposed to arrive. A shocking day for Portland and the world. He was only 42.
