On Thursday morning from the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, team executives for the new ECHL team in the city discussed plans for the new franchise, including naming the new team's nickname.

The franchise is looking to crowd-source the nickname for the team to fans in the state and have offered prizes to the person who selects the winning one.  Among the prizes include a signed jersey, four season ticket passes, and being involved with the ceremonial puck drop on opening night.

Among those who were in attendance for the press conference were ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna, Philadelphia Flyers President Paul Holmgren, and Cross Insurance Arena General Manager Matt Herpich.  Executives also during the event laid out plans to let fans contribute to the nickname the franchise would use moving forward.

McKenna expressed that the ECHL is committed to keeping hockey in the city of Portland for a long time and Holmgren hearkened back to the long history of pro hockey in the city.

Last month it was announced that pro hockey was coming back to Portland after the Pirates of the AHL left following the 2015-16 season.  They're slated to begin starting with the 2018-19 season after relocating an Alaska ECHL franchise.
