The answer is, 'we don't.'

As we grumble awake today, deprived an hour of sleep, who may ask 'why do we have Daylight Saving Time?' You're not alone. A lot of studies over the years have found that Daylight Saving Time is pretty useless.

  • We don't save that much energy, if any. Bummer, considering the modern use of Daylight Saving Time was to save energy...
  • Regularly changing sleep cycles because of Daylight Saving Time has shown lower work force productivity and an increases in heart attacks. See, it's even bad for your health!
  • A 2005 study found airline companies loose about $147 million from being out of sync with European time. They don't consider it 'summer time' till March 30.
  • The best is for last. A University of Texas study found that most Americans set their schedules around TV viewing, opposed to the sun. This can both be interesting, and totally depressing.

My favorite place in the world, Arizona, doesn't see the point in Daylight Saving Time. Nor does Hawaii. U.S. territories that also don't give a hoot about DST are Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam and the U-S Virgin Islands.
