Ever wonder why there's an airstrip in Deblois?  We did too.

As recent as the late seventies, you may have seen military aircraft flying low over the pines in that area of Washington County, and for good reason.

The airstrip runs alongside the Beddington Road/Route 193, about halfway between Route 9 and Route 1A in Cherryfield, was constructed in 1942 by the United States Army Air Force, a part of the military during World War II that would eventually turn into the United States Air Force. It was used for training purposes for many years until the military eventually turned it over to the State.  It is now owned by the Maine Department of Transportation.

Now before you go out there with that hot car of yours to do donuts, realize that it is still an operational air field and is open for public use.  There is no operational control tower there and small flights landing and taking off from the 3,520 by 75 foot runaway are monitored by Bangor International Airport.  AirNav says an average of 100 flights, or about 8 per month, used the airfield back in 2014.  It's for daytime use only and closed during the winter months except for planes with skis.
