A woman is dead and her son critically injured after they were hit by a tractor trailer on Interstate 95, just north of Lincoln.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the woman was holding her young son in the travel lane of the interstate when the tractor trailer came up on them and was unable to stop. The woman, who was in her late 20s, was outside her vehicle, which was parked in the breakdown lane. She was killed instantly and her toddler was critically injured.

State Troopers are investigating the circumstances of the crash. The woman's husband, who lives in a nearby town, was notified by Troopers and is at the hospital with his son. The victims' names are expected to be released tomorrow, pending notification of family.

The accident closed the  northbound lanes of Interstate 95 and traffic was detoured at the Lincoln exit, as police investigated. The road is expected to be reopened shortly.
